All We Need

A few weeks ago a friend showed me her copy of this neat little devotional book. As one always seeking to redefine what contentment actually looks like in my life, I sat down to skim the occasional chapter.

Skimming led to focused reading which led to me rummaging through my purse for any scrap of paper (in this instance, part of a coupon from Sobeys) and scribbling down the following:
"Whatever we long for but lack is an area in which God will reveal himself to be adequate for us. The source of our misery is not that we lack the thing we long for; our misery comes from wanting that thing so much that we are not open to recognizing or receiving any alternate.

Contentment comes as we wait on the God's timetable and as we trust that what he provides in the midst of our lack is really all we need until he provides something else."
This really moved me. That scrap of paper has been on my fridge ever since. What we long for (read: want) can take up our entire view; we so often fail to see that we have everything we need. I can be so fixated on what I want; what if instead I turned that energy to recognizing what the Lord has already provided without my asking?

I think I'll pray that the Lord open my eyes to His provision in all aspects of my life... not just in the daily, physical needs that He meets, but also in the emotional and spiritual areas in my life that are often so consumed with my desires, not His.
