| Your Recipes. My Crock Pot. You Win. |
I was reading through the submitted recipes for Len, and he immediately chose the pea soup recipe, so here is our first crack at this contest. I had Len set a loaf of bread to be done in the bread machine by the time I got home, so I am enjoying my dinner and blogging at the same time.
The Recipe:
I had to make some adjustments and do some math since I had a giant package of split peas (green, not yellow as the submitted recipe suggested), so I worked backwards based on the package suggestions, and based on the results, it looked like I guessed right. I also didn't have powdered chicken broth, so I used chicken bouillon instead.
The Photos:Split Pea Soup1.5 cups green split peas1-2 cups cooked turkey, diced1 cup diced carrots½ onion2 cloves of garlic1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
7 cups of boiling water
1 tbsp of powdered chicken broth (or one cube of chicken bouillon, on the counter)
- I like to add some hot pepper flakes, but that's optional.
Cook on low for 4-6 hours.

The Rating:
Thelma's Rating: 9/10
I would have liked it to be a bit thicker, but it was hearty and a good mix of flavours. It was also a good amount of soup to provide some leftovers without having too many. I liked it and will definitely make it again, but will have to play with the water content a bit to make a thicker soup.
Revised my rating from 7/10 to 9/10! The leftovers were amazing!!
Len's Rating: 6.5/10
I enjoyed two bowls of this soup, but felt it could have used a little more 'zing'. Even with the added chili flakes, it needs something. Next time we'll play a bit with some other spices or additional vegetables to find that perfect flavour.
Final Score: 15.5/20

That's sounds great! I'll be interested in hearing your rating. The bread sounds especially yummy. Perhaps I should start making my own bread...
ReplyDeleteI bet you could make it thicker if you would put the mixture in the food processor and puree it. But that would be a lot more work and defeat the purpose of a crock pot meal, in my opinion, so adjusting the water would probably be a better plan.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've never heard of split pea soup with turkey in it. I always use ham or some other kind of pork. That would probably add more flavor. You could also try adding more bouillon and/or salt (the salt will bring out the flavors more.)
