My Favourite Things: Monday

Ah, Labour Day weekend!  It's been delightfully cool and less delightfully rainy but a wonderful long weekend nonetheless.  Which brings me to 8:36 on this overcast morning, listening to The Len making me a coffee in the kitchen and bringing you another installment of My Favourite Things.

My feet are cold.  Just as an aside. I thought you might want to know that.

This week's category: favourite hymns.  Or, more specifically, favourite stanzas of certain hymns.

I've always loved 'Great is Thy Faithfulness'.  My father and I used to sing hymns while we were milking cows in the evening.  He had them printed out on brightly coloured papers and tacked to the wall; 'How Great Thou Art' and this hymn were always my favourites.

Of this hymn, the third stanza is my favourite:

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Yesterday in church we sang one of my newer favourites:
Since our great High Priest, Christ Jesus, bears the Name above all names,
reigning Son of God, surpassing other titles, powers, and claims;
since to heaven our Lord has passed, let us hold our witness fast!

Since we have a priest who suffered, knowing weakness, tears and pain;
who, like us was tried and tempted, unlike us, without a stain;
since He shared our lowly place, let us boldly seek His grace!

Sacrifice and suffering over, now He sits at God's right hand,
Crowned with praise, no more an outcast, His preeminence long planned;
such a great High Priest we have, strong to help, supreme to save!

Love's example, hope's attraction, faith's beginning and its end,
pioneer of our salvation, mighty Advocate and Friend;
Jesus, now in glory raised, our ascended Lord, be praised!

I love this hymn... the words are based on texts from Hebrews.  The final stanza moves me to tears each time I sing it; I just love how the character of Jesus is captured in such a beautiful snapshot of praise!  Our great High Priest indeed!

And so, those are my favourite hymns this Labour Day Monday!
Can't wait to read about some of yours!

  1. Lovely post! We sang "Great is Thy Faithfulness" yesterday. Our worship leader for the week asked all of the pastor's wives what their favorite hymns were, and we sang those. My choice was "Victory in Jesus." I haven't sung that song in years. I can't get through the words without tearing up, but for some reason it's not very popular.

    I heard an old, old story,
    How a Savior came from glory,
    How He gave His life on Calvary
    To save a wretch like me;
    I heard about His groaning,
    Of His precious blood's atoning,
    Then I repented of my sins
    And won the victory.

    Chorus
    O victory in Jesus,
    My Savior, forever.
    He sought me and bought me
    With His redeeming blood;
    He loved me ere I knew Him
    And all my love is due Him,
    He plunged me to victory,
    Beneath the cleansing flood.

    I heard about His healing,
    Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
    How He made the lame to walk again
    And caused the blind to see;
    And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
    Come and heal my broken spirit,"
    And somehow Jesus came and bro't
    To me the victory.

    I heard about a mansion
    He has built for me in glory.
    And I heard about the streets of gold
    Beyond the crystal sea;
    About the angels singing,
    And the old redemption story,
    And some sweet day I'll sing up there
    The song of victory.

    O victory in Jesus,
    My Savior, forever.
    He sought me and bought me
    With His redeeming blood;
    He loved me ere I knew Him
    And all my love is due Him,
    He plunged me to victory,
    Beneath the cleansing flood.

  2. My two favorites have always been How Great Thou Art and It Is Well. But I have recently moved The Love of God to the #1 position.

    The love of God is greater far
    Than tongue or pen can ever tell
    It goes beyond the highest star
    And reaches to the lowest hell
    The guilty pair, bowed down with care
    God gave His Son to win
    His erring child He reconciled
    And pardoned from his sin

    Could we with ink the ocean fill
    And were the skies of parchment made
    Were every stalk on earth a quill
    And every man a scribe by trade

    To write the love of God above
    Would drain the ocean dry
    Nor could the scroll contain the whole
    Though stretched from sky to sky

    O love of God, how rich and pure!
    How measureless and strong!
    It shall forevermore endure
    The saints' and angels' song

  3. "Nothing but the Blood" will always be one of my faves. Hope that's the right title for it - it's my name for it at least. :~}

    And my verification word for this comment is "knodynob" which is making me laugh right now. Must think of something to name "knodynob"...

  4. I love the old classic I'll Fly Away. Just makes me smile - good memories of singing this song with saints who have already flown away!

    I'll Fly Away
    (written by Alfred E. Brumley)

    Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
    I'll fly away;
    To a home on God's celestial shore,
    I'll fly away.
    Chorus:
    I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away;
    when I die, hallelujah, by and by,
    I'll fly away.

    When the shadows of this life have grown,
    I'll fly away;
    Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
    I'll fly away.

    Chorus

    Just a few more weary days and then,
    I'll fly away;
    to a land where joys shall never end,
    I'll fly away.

    Chorus

  5. My current favourite is 'How Deep the Father's Love For Us'. Here's one verse:

    'Behold the Man upon the cross.
    My sin, upon His shoulders.
    Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
    Call out among the scoffers.
    It was my sin that held Him there,
    Until it was accomplished.
    His dying breath hath brought me life
    I know that it is finished.'

    Look it up on YouTube. It chokes me up every time.

    Linda

    PS - I've been reading the Pioneer Woman's site lately - I could see the two of you getting along quite well!

  6. Favourite hymns - the list is long! I picked two, but it is so hard to pick only two!

    And I'm only a day late...

    Thanks for hosting!
