Summer Treat

If people ask for my advice (they don't, but on the extremely rare occurrence that it might happen) on losing weight or making healthful choices I might offer the following: don't drink your carbs or empty calories.  Water is your friend.

However, it's summer.

And again, people don't ask for my advice.  The reason for this may be that I don't always follow my own advice.  Right now, for example, I'm about to give you a yummy, 60 calorie summer drink that makes my toe nails do a happy dance.

If you don't like coffee, this post is not for you.

If like me, however, you love the high-calorie-super-sweet-and-creamy-iced coffees you can buy almost anywhere for astronomical amounts of money, look no further.  To borrow from Tim Horton's nutrition guide again, making this drink at home will not only save you $2-4, it will also save you 100-380 calories, depending on whether you're buying the iced coffee or the iced capp.

It's win-win.  Feel free to send me presents to express your gratitude.

Iced Coffee
Yield: 3 servings (60 calories per serving)

3 cups hot, brewed coffee
2-3 Tbsp Splenda sugar substitute
1/2 cup skim milk
1/4 cup light (5%) cream
Lots o' ice cubes

1. Pour hot (or warm) coffee into a jug; add Splenda, adjusting sweetness to preferred taste.  Stir until Splenda has completely dissolved.
2. Allow to cool for several hours.
3. Add skim milk and light cream, and blend.
4. Serve chilled on the rocks.

Alternatively, (though I've yet to try it) I think you could crush ice cubes in a blender and go for the 'iced cappuccino' variation.  If you decide it's not worth it to use a sugar substitute, by my calculations you'll have to add at least 150 calories to the recipe.

Delicious creamy, cool taste.  Only sixty calories.  A worthy indulgence and marvelous exception to the rule.

Go ahead.  Drink your carbs.  Clearly I'm doing it.

  4. Hubby makes an iced coffee drink that isn't nearly so calorie-conscious (it contains sweetened condensed milk) but it sure is yummy. We don't keep Splenda on hand, nor skim milk or light cream, but this sounds nice.

  5. Another option is to freeze the drink in ice cube trays, then crush in a blender with some milk. Slush - yum!
