Golf

What I know about golf:

1. My husband loves it but can’t play anymore.
2. There are fun carts to drive around in.
3. The sticks golfers use to whack a wee ball around are called clubs.
4. There are different kinds of clubs: drivers, irons and woods.
5. The different kinds of clubs have different uses, though I couldn’t tell you when you’d use which one except.
6. If you are only carrying a golfer’s clubs around the course and not playing, you are a caddy.
7. The part that the hole is in is called a ‘green’.
8. There are 18 holes in a round of golf.
9. It’s important to get the ball in the hole.
10. It’s important to keep the hole out of the water, the rough or the trees.
11. It’s important not to hit other golfers.
12. Sometimes there is a need to yell ‘Fore!’
13. I have never played golf before.
14. I need to learn to play golf by August. 

Now, to be fair, I have been to the driving range before at least three times. Granted, each of those times was over ten years ago and during at least one or two of those times I was tucked under an awning in a comfy chair reading a book. The one time I actually participated, I shattered the head of the rented driver.

A supplier asked me last week whether he could take me and two other guys from work out for a round of golf. I laughed out loud when I read that email, and promptly responded that he would likely have a more successful game if I wasn’t there. He came back and asked again, and he’s apparently not concerned that there is a very good chance not a single ball of mine will make it to the hole. Either that or he’s relishing the prospect of what will likely be a highly entertaining round of golf.

I think two years ago I would have begged off with every possible excuse I could imagine, but as I’m working to increase my bravery for trying new things, I’m finding it harder to make up lame excuses to something that would (if nothing else) be a fun evening out.  That, and my supplier won't let me off the hook.

And really, who doesn’t love a chance to drive a fun cart and yell ‘Fore!’ at unsuspecting golfers?
