My Favourite Things: Monday

Happy holiday Monday, my Canadian friends! I really need to eat breakfast because my stomach is protesting loudly but instead I am here posting faithfully. Len? Still in bed. This is not particularly surprising. The weather is very beautiful this weekend, and after I get the seeds in the garden we have plans to geocache.

Today's favourite thing is a kitchen gadget I put to good use this weekend... my Tupperware burger press:
I make burgers many times during the summer; usually I just take the hamburger out of the freezer the morning of and throw them on the grill after work. I've been waiting for hamburger meat to go on sale so I could make a batch of burgers to freeze rather than having to make them after work.

Guess what? $1.99/lb this weekend. So off I went.
I'm sure everyone's recipe for homemade burgers is different. I have friends who just use a little salt and pepper. I typically use the following:
A little BBQ sauce, a dollop of liquid smoke, some Worcestershire sauce, a small palm full of parsley, about half that amount of oregano and enough (but not too many) bread crumbs to make them hold together. It's a very exact science, as you can see. And mix.
Next, we whip out the digital scale and the burger press. I've been packaging my frozen meats into 3-4 oz servings so that I don't need to do that math while I'm making dinner.
Press. I use wax paper to keep the meat from sticking to the press, especially when making the number of burgers I was making Saturday. Maybe there's a trick for preventing that, but I haven't learned it yet.
Beautifully pressed burger, ready for freezing.
And... twenty burgers later! I think we're set for the first half of the summer.
Breakfast time! Looking forward to reading your posts on your favourite kitchen gadget!

  3. I remember that burger press - used to use it at home lots when I was growing up. Good idea too on weighing your meat - never even thought of that - duh!!

Good place to get ground beef (and any other meat) is Lococo's

  4. My favourite things, whether a kitchen gadget, or otherwise, are all in boxes on a U-Haul. Sorry I missed this week...we were loading the U-Haul on Monday!

Aren't homemade burgers the best? My recipe is an "exact science" just like yours :) I add 1 egg per pound of hamburger, which means I probably also use more breadcrumbs than you. I also add a little bit of water - makes the meat a little less sticky - maybe that would help with keeping the meat from sticking to your burger press? I don't have a burger press, so I smush them by hand.
